In the Shade of an Old Oak Tree

In the shade of an old oak tree
I laid down for a few minutes of sleep
and through the limbs and the leaves
I could see the clouds smiling down upon me

I closed my eyes in the shadows of the sun
and dreamed of summer, of ice cold lemonade,
I dreamed of oceans, beaches, and having fun
but I awoke in chills, with my fingers blue & numb

I laid down in summer
and slept through the fall
winter was all around me
and I couldn’t believe I missed it all

In the shade of what was an old oak tree
lifeless, leafless and covered in snow
I wondered why he let me sleep for so long
don’t look, don’t speak, don’t turn around to see
that I am all alone
I know I am not the same
my breath hangs on frozen air
icicles are dangling everywhere
skeleton shadows smile
showing their eerie, grey teeth
and I can’t believe I lost it all
in the shade of an old oak tree
